A courthouse town since 1821
Ashville is one of the two county seats of St. Clair County, the other being Pell City, and it had 2,346 residents at the 2020 census. It began as St. Clairsville and was renamed for John Ash, the area's first white settler, who arrived in 1817.[1]
It became the county seat in 1821 and incorporated in 1822. The current courthouse dates to 1844, and John Ash's log cabin still stands in the city center.[1]
