The German-founded county seat
Cullman is the seat of Cullman County and counted 18,213 residents in 2020. Colonel John G. Cullmann, a German immigrant, founded it in 1873, and the city still celebrates that heritage with an annual Oktoberfest.[1]
The city sits at about 814 feet on the Brindley Mountain plateau, roughly 50 miles north of Birmingham and 55 miles south of Huntsville along Interstate 65. Ave Maria Grotto, with 125 miniature reproductions of famous religious structures, is its best-known attraction.[1]
