Named for a square mile of school land

Section was once called Mt.  Zion.  It took its present name because it held the 16th Section, a square-mile parcel the federal government set aside to support public schools.[1]

Pioneers arrived in large numbers in 1862, and the town incorporated in 1946.  It rests on Sand Mountain at 1,348 feet, northwest of Rainsville and southeast of Scottsboro.[1]
