From Depression-era farm project to town

Skyline began in 1934 as Cumberland Farms, a cooperative agricultural project of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, one of 43 such experiments nationwide.  It was renamed Skyline Farms to avoid confusion with a similar Tennessee project, and the experiment ended around 1944.[1]

Today's town sits on the Cumberland Plateau at 1,591 feet and was incorporated in 1985, about a mile north of the old farm settlement.[1]

Skyline facts

  • Skyline had 834 residents in the 2020 census, down 2.0 percent from 851 in 2010.[1]

  • State Route 79 passes through, running south toward Scottsboro and north toward Tennessee.[1]

  • The town covers about 3.99 square miles.[1]

  • Skyline is in western Jackson County.[1]
