History along State Route 67

Somerville, in Morgan County, sits on State Route 67 at about 604 feet of elevation.  The 2020 census counted 796 residents, up from 724 in 2010.[1]

It is part of the Decatur Metropolitan Area and the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area.[1]

Somerville history

  • The town was named for Robert M. Summerville, an officer killed in 1814 during the Creek War.[1]

  • Somerville was first incorporated in December 1819 and served as the Morgan County seat until 1891, when the seat moved to Decatur.[1]

  • The Somerville Courthouse, built in 1837, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is Federal style.[1]
