Settled in 1836 on Sand Mountain

Sylvania is on Sand Mountain in northern DeKalb County, covering 8.61 square miles.  The 2020 census counted 1,790 residents, down slightly from 1,837 in 2010.[1]

State Route 75 passes through the town, leading northeast to Henagar and southwest to Rainsville.[1]

  • The settlement was established in 1836 and incorporated in October 1967.[1]

  • Sylvania High School was built in 1947 after a fire destroyed its predecessor in 1945.[1]

  • The school's mascot is the Rams, with gold and green colors.[1]
